Project Description
Learning culture through city soundscapes is a comprehensive Educational Tool for understanding cultural practices and cultural heritage through the ethnographic documentation of the soundscapes of the city. Specifically, through guided fieldwork projects centering on the sound topography of the city, participants create digital representations of the collected archival, textual, visual, musical and sonic data within an Interactive Digital Environment. This dynamic cartographic approach to the city soundscapes feeds back into the educational process, providing a useful medium for a critical understanding of the notion of culture.
The proposed Educational Tool is designed for university programmes in the fields of ethnomusicology, music history, cultural history, anthropology, cultural studies and cultural geography. It combines digital humanities with conventional teaching methods, and aims to incorporate new technologies in teaching; to propose a learning model based on personal engagement with the world; to provide an interface between the university classroom and society; and to preserve and disseminate cultural heritage.
